This shows a report made by Mr. Yoshinori Nagaura, the current president of Nagaura Net, who visited Denmark in June, 1999. He got on a gill net fishing boat in operation and watched its fishing operation.

This photo shows that the gill net is thrown into the sea. In this season, a fishing boat of this size uses 2,000 meter-long gill net in the sea area whose depth is 20m or 30m. In almost all cases, one fisherman does this operation alone. The gill net is Mono-String #6 with its mesh sizes of 110m/m.
The fishing season was in the final phase when I visited there. So, in the final phase of the season, they use a smaller amount of gill nets than in the mid-season. Their main target is cod. Flat fish and rockfish are also caught in the nets but they are released into the sea later because of their very small price values. Normally cod comes in various sizes, but they say that, in recent years, a little small type of cod is caught in this sea area.

Too small fish are released into the sea. One fisherman does every thing using the triple roller.

This roller runs very slow for safety. He hooks fish, removes them from the net and puts them into the left-sided containers. Then, he puts the net into the rear box in the left for re-throwing the net into the sea.
This hydraulic roller is for a bigger gill net boat than the above one. This photo shows the inside of the fishing boat on the left. This boat has sole nets on it. We use this Net Cleaner when we unload the used gill net from the boat and put the net away back into the original storage.
